A Peek at Woodville and More…

I really need to dump my photos off my cards!  Yikes! I keep saying Iwill keep up from now on, but it seems like photos add up FAST!

Here are a couple of photos I took a few days ago in Woodville.

I love that RED boat! Since the lake flooded the parking lot at the boat launch for a couple of weeks in April, Iwas surprised to see the wild Irises growing!  I thought they might have been messed up or that they might bloom much later!

For Memorial Day, we had placed a new bouquet of flowers on my father-in-law’s grave.  I also snapped a couple photos of an eagle memorial that wasat the cemeteryto honor those who served in the US armed forces. My father-in-law loved eagles!

Here is what is gracing our dinner table.

I love Carnations.  I love their spicy scent and their appearance.  I think the pink ones are especially pretty with the white Baby’s Breath. These were the combination I chose for flowers for our wedding!

Okay, then.  Are you sitting down?  This next photo is of “someone” who lives not too far away. I only had the little Canon camera with meon the dayItook this photo and I was bummed I had left the Nikon with its telephoto at home….

I aim to get a BETTER photo, but in the meantime….If you travel down Route 64,  just south of the Town of Bristol (maybe 2 or 3 miles?) look at the small blue house on the west side of the road.  You will see the recliner sitting there and perhaps….well…

A (very) Quiet New Year’s Eve

Well, it was *kinda* quiet!

Actually, the noise was from the Canada Geese!…okay, I’ll explain!

The kids were happy to get home on Thursday evening from our little vacation, as they were attending a New Year’s Eve party with their friends over in Middlesex.  They met at the church and hung out there, watching videos and playing games.

Mark and I dropped the kids off and then headed on up to Canandaigua. We weren’t really sure what we wanted to do, but we thought about eating out.  Mark mentioned a fish fry since it was Friday night.  We thought about one place a neighbor had highly recommended….after attempting their number several times and getting a message the number is no longer in service, we gave up.

Mark pulled out his computer and looked at a site that gives information about “the best fish fries in the Finger Lakes”. Well, one of the other businesses listed is being sold becaused it was closed down for tax evasion.  (I later looked online and I think the business mentioned above was also closed because of tax evasion. Gads, not so good for a city as small as Canandaigua!)

Mark found another business mentioned a few miles north of Canandaigua.  I told him I would be up for a little ride.  In looking online for information, a news story came up that the owner of that establishment was charged with theft. The business is no longer in business!

Back online again, Mark found a small bar listed, so he called and ordered two takeout fish fries. They were ready in about half an hour and I hopped inside to pick them up.  The decor inside was not exactly great….it was rather austere, but at least it was still in business!

Mark and I went down by the lake and parked the truck.  The little Scottie boys were with us and I was happy eating in the cozy atmosphere of our truck.  The weather was crazy warm…a sweater would have sufficed for being outside!  Mark rolled the window down for a few minutes and all we heard was loud honking from the lake.  Mark turned on the headlights momentarily, and the “reflective” white rumps on the geese gave them away!

The fish fries were good.  That was a big plus!

Here is a photo of our view….

If you click to enlarge this, you can (barely) make out the American flag flying in the center of the photo.

It was so pleasant just eating and relaxing in the confines of the truck.  The lapping water, squawking geese, and lack of time restraints made this time so precious!  This doesn’t happen often and I treasure moments like this when there are no demands and no contention, just peacefullness!

We left our pleasant surroundings around 10:45 to pick Michelle up at the church.  Ben spent the night, along with several other young men…I think they were up all night; we picked Ben up on New Year’s Day and he was pretty sleepy, indeed!

Allegany Adventure continued

First of all,  Happy New Year!  to all my friends and family.   May this be a year filled with goodness for you all!

Even though it was terribly awkward taking pictures while snowmobiling, I did manage to take more than I had thought!

Thursday was our last day at the park.  When we awakened, we were shocked at how cold it was outside!  Everything was covered in a pretty substantial frost, and as we walked to the restrooms, the snow made that unmistakably “yesitissocoldthe snowis CRUNCHINGunderourfeet” sound! Cold or not,  Mark wanted to make the most of our last day out.  We were off before 8 am!

Funny, but for all the photos I took, I didn’t get one of our cabin!  I took a couple inside the cabin, but none outside! This photo was of the sky, but the cabin in the photo was directly across from us and was exactly like ours.  We had chosen a handicap-accessible cabin and it was so nice.  Mark could roll the wheelchair right in from outside and onto the concrete floor!  The floor bothered me…it was so cold and sterile, but we never had to worry about tracking snow across it!

The kids had pulled a huge icicle off the side of the cabin. It was at least three feet long! Ben placed it, pointed end up in a snowbank just outside the door!

There was an area near a picnic location with a big open hill.  It looked like many people had played on their snowmobiles there, and Ben and Mark had previosly checked it out.  Mark encouraged me to have a look and the view of the enchanted Mountains was….well, I guess the word would have to be awesome.

Since the windshield is more of  device to direct airflow over my head than to actually *see* through, this crazy frost didn’t bother my vision.  But, you can see how cold it really was!

No picnicking any time soon….

We came to the conclusion that when the groomer does up the trails, he or she must usher snow into the covered bridge as the base was really thick!

Okay, so you have seen ho much fun we have had, riding at the park.  It was astronomical!  I cannot remember when I have enjoyed anything so much.  But I love the winter!  Being out in the cold is of no consequence in snowmobile clothes, either.  Several times, I unzipped the front zipper on my jacket as I was getting too warm.  However…….

being a bit claustraphobic, it took a great deal of courage on my part to realize I was not going to stop breathing by placing all this gear on my head!!! I actually breathed through my mouth, every now and then gasping. When it warmed up, I would also uncover my nose and that felt so good!

I miss the park. I love living rustically, but I must admit, I did miss my computer time!  I wish we could find a property in the snowbelt and build a simple cabin there.  The kids loved snowmobiling as much as Mark and I did! We traveled to a small town about 9 miles from our cabin for gas and oil on Thursday. Since Mark’s sled is a two-up, I rode on the back on the way to the town and Michelle rode on the back on the return trip.

In case I haven’t mentioned it, this snowmobiling s such good clean fun!

Our Allegany Adventure

I was hoping to get these photos edited and posted earlier, but when I got out of bed in the morning,  I was greeted by mounds of dirty laundry that would drive me to distraction if I left them!  Michelle was busy making goodies for a New Year’s Eve party, so she was predisposed.  So, I washed, dried, and folded seven loads of laundry today.  And, the psad part is that I had all of the laundry caught up before we left on our adventure!

Tonight, while Michelle and Ben were at their party, Mark and I sat lakeside in Canandaigua and I went through my photos.  I had to resize them before uploading them.  As I looked at the images, I realized this is going to have to be two posts!  I just had to show so many pictures!

This is the administration building where we signed in for our cabin and received the key.

We immediately went to the cabin and Ben and Mark worked to unload the sleds.  As soon as they were off the trailer, Mark and Ben were ready to ride!  They asked me to go along and Michelle urged me to do so, saying she and the Scotties would bring in our belongings and arrange everything!

The following photos were all taken from the snowmobile.  As I mentioned previously, it is hard to take photos on a snowmobile, particularly when riding with others!  In the time it takes to remove gloves and fish the camera from my pocket,  Mark and Ben could be in the next county! (Well, slight exaggeration!)

Our snow amount was so puny compared with this!

The park has about 75 miles of trails, so map reading skills are mandatory.  Good thing Mark and Ben can read maps!

One of the most fascinating things about riding the snowmobiles is that Mark is able to see areas and places he could never see firsthand.  There are just so many places a wheelchair cannot travel.

Allegany State Park has about 350 cabins in the park and we were able to pass by many of them! (Most are open in the summer camping season, although many are equipped with propane heat or woodstoves for winter camping)

While many of the woodland trails are fairly narrow, the park closes some of the roads in the winter, allowing snowmobile travel over them.  They are glorious and so much fun to ride!

The little yellow sign was posted warning of a steep hill ahead. Mark waited while Ben rode the hill to see if it might be too steep for Mark and me to pass.  Thankfully, it was not and we whizzed right on up!

We came upon an area called Thunder Rocks.  The rocks…ummm….boulders!….are huge. I think some are nearly as large as our house.  This is another place Mark has never seen, as access is limited for those with wheelchairs.

Mark and Ben went ahead of me and I found them hiding beneath a giant rock!

Here you can see this “rock” stands pretty tall!

On the path once again, we came across a stand of trees that resembled spines…the snow looked like vertebrae!

The last few photos were taken as the day was drawing to a close.  This ride was so exhilerating.  At this point, we were high up on a mountain, looking down.  It was so very beautiful! These are called the Enchanted Mountains and they certainly are enchanting!

When I looked down the trail and saw that straight line, I felt my knees getting shaky!  Fortunately, that was only a gas pipeline, and the trail veered off to the left!

I am going to end this here for now and will post my last pictures later!

The Days Just Slip Away!

I cannot believe I have once again allowed this blog to get behind, but I have! It seems like each day brings on more tasks and we are always going upwards! (as in pushing a very large boulder uphill!)

Today, Mark had a dental cleaning appoinment late this morning.  After the appointment, we drove down to Hornell to get the snowmobiles registered.  It is always so much easier to go to the Hornell office, as Canandaigua requires one to go to three different clerks before getting out the door.  The system sounds good, but when going, it is wise to pack a lunch!  Okay, slight exaggeration, but I don’t like waiting in line for hours…and yes, it really is hours!

After visiting the DMV,  we were off to get a late lunch.  We had a tremendous lunch at a Chinese restaurant there and then we were off again…this time to the home of my Amish friend and her husband.  Mark has been trying to help them in negotiating with the hospital for their baby daughter’s care.

If I may rant for a bit…

We are asked to be *tolerant* as far as skin color, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, etc.  Why, then, are the Amish treated like second rate citizens?  Let me make note that an organization that works with Amish and Mennonites has tried to negotiate with the hospital to no avail.  It is a known fact that hospitals charge well above the actual cost of services and goods provided.  The company that tried to do the negotiating offered a higher amount than Medicaid would pay, and they were turned down.  The hospital  never even came back with a counter offer.

My heart aches for my friends. They don’t have a third of a million dollars for their bill.  Why is the hospital being so stubborn!  Well,  my friends have begun making small payments to the hospital and as long as they are paying something, I hope that will keep the wolves at bay.  Why would the hospital have turned down a large lump sum only to be given a small amount each month?  In all actuality, the amount will take probably more than a lifetime to pay off.

Well, sorry to rant, but I feel so helpless!

Tis the night before the night before Christmas!  Is everyone ready?  I feel like I am behind, but I will leave it at that.  I am tired of feeling like Christmas has to be perfect.  After all, the perfect Christmas gift was offered to all mankind in the form of a precious baby, and He is the best gift of all!

Are You Planning to View the Lunar Eclipse?

While Ben enjoyed a dip in the hot tub earlier this evening, I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful the moon is in the sky!

I took that photo not too long ago, and now the skies are totally overcast with light snowfall.  We are due to see the eclipse here on the east coast at approximately 2:45 am,  according to what I read.  I hope the sky clears up before then!

In the meantime, here is a look at the wreath on our front door with the lights shining on it.  I love the bell wreath inside the green one….I wanted to capture the way the bells sparkle, but that is a pretty tough task!  The light plays off the glitter on the bells and it is so very, very pretty!

Totally defying the cold temperatures outside, the home fires keep burning, heating the house very snuggly!

Did I say snuggly?  A few times, I have propped open the window in temperatures that would kill a person were they left outside with no means of keeping warm!  I have been sleeping in my summer jammies, too!

Last week, while popping into Aldi for a couple things,  I caught one of their too-good-to-miss deals! (again!)  The store sells six long stem roses for $3.99 all the time.  But on the day I was there, the roses were marked 1/2 off!   I bought a DOZEN long-stemmed red roses for $4.99!  I went on over to WalMart and found a big bouquet of carnations for $10.00. I added some greenery for $5.00. The $18.99 result?

This bouquet is huge! I am enjoying it so much and Mark and the kids even mentioned how pretty it is and how nice the spicy carnations smell! I used a teapot the kids bought a couple of years ago for the vase.

Sorry about my long leaves lately.  There is just so very much happening and it seems the harder I run, the more behind I fall….kinda reminds me of the Amish saying,  “the hurrier I go, the behinder I get”…..

What a Strange Day this Was!

This morning, we awakened to a beautiful blanket of white!  It was so pretty and the Scottie boys were anxious to get outside!

I had an appointment for the dentist this morning at 10:40.  As I was getting ready for the appointment, the office called to say they were way behind and could I come in at 11:30 instead?  And so I did.

Today was the day I was supposed to have the little pin put into the empty space where my tooth was pulled. Instead, I was switched to getting some other work done.  It seems that the office is doing more mini-implants, so they purchased a special x-ray machine that measures bone density and gives the dentist an idea of what size pin to use and how deep.  As I was being worked on, the new machine was being delivered.  As I left the office,  the front doorway was literally being dismantled so the bulky piece could be carried on in!

This afternoon, I was reading emails and looking at different sites on the web.  As I looked at a blog I had started long, long ago,  I noticed an author had written a message for me today.  I won a book!  I love reading boks about the Amish and I had commented on her blog when she interviewed another author.  My name was randomly chosen! Hurrah!!!

It was funny that I won that book because it felt very much like my family was rejecting me today! There was no certain instance or circumstance that brought on such feelings of rejection…just a series of things that just made me feel like….well…I dunno…eating worms?

As I thought about it,  I was feeling a tad lonely, if not pitiful!  Suddenly, I came upon the notice and it was as though the Lord ws smiling down on me and showing me that it matters not how I feel, as in His Great Economy, I *am* loved. And favored, even!  After all, I won a  book!

I was so uplifted by this turn of events that I decided to make Buffalo Chicken Crepes like the ones I got when I met my blogger friend Jeanne last week for lunch.  The end result was that everyone gave me a big thumbs up! Yay! More favor.  I had made my own chicken wing sauce and (this one was pretty exciting when the family all liked it!) my own Bleu Cheese Dressing.  Everything turned out so picture perfect…darn! WHY did I not take a photo?

Here is a photo of the wreath on our front door.  I had loved the bell wreaths and when I spotted one at Big Lots over a month ago,  I bought it.  What was funny is that I had bought an artificial wreath for the door previously. Much to my joy, the bell wreath fit neatly inside the green one!  I love the look!

And, one more. The big wreath on the garage, beautifully “flocked”!

A Run to Snow Country

Everyone who lives in or near New York State knows that Buffalo(and points south)  have always been considered the “armpit of the state” when it comes to winter weather.(Snow. Snow. Snow!)  I will never forget when I worked in New York City.  One day, my boss called me into his office.  Fearfully wondering what I did wrong, I walked into the office only to have my boss roar with laughter as he related a story he heard on the news the night before.  It seems the City of Buffalo was sending their copious amounts of snow by railway to my hometown to dump into the Chadakoin River.

The reason Buffalo is the brunt of many a joke is because it sits on Lake Erie.  As the cold northwest winds blow in from Canada,  moisture is picked up passing over the lake  and then drops down on Buffalo and the Southtowns in the form of snow.  It isn’t a mystery and it usually is a pretty sure thing in the winter.

Mark found a(nother) snowmobile that was for sale in “Snow Country”, so yesterday we took a ride to pick it up.  We now have three sleds that cost less than one brand new one would run.

I took a few photos along the way…some out of the window, and some more out and about.  As you will see, the snow offers such a wonderful backdrop!

Scenes from the Truck Today

This afternoon, we left home-sweet-home to do a few running around chores.  Those chores were all to the north of us and while we (argh!) live two miles from a ski area and have been getting no snow, we certainly saw some today!

These photos, save the very last one, were all taken as we drove westward from Palmyra towards Rochester along Route 31.

That last photo was taken at a plaza where we stopped. As you can see, the snow was falling at a pretty healthy rate! I think Mark was grateful to arrive home safely from our journey…the major roads were snow-covered and people were driving very slowly except for the crazies that came flying past every now and then, looking like the pavement was clear and dry!

I was very happy to walk into a warm and cozy house. I will never tire of our fantastic woodstove!

Bet You Thought I’d Gone Away?

No, I have been here. I have just been overwhelmed by day to day life in general.  As I watched the days passing by one after another,  I decided I would wait until December first to begin posting once again.

In all honesty, life has been so full of this, that, and the other thing, I just thought a break would be beneficial to my overly-stimulated brain cells!  I keep bumping into myself coming and going and I was feeling a bit “fragile” to be perfectly frank.  Life has been one activity followed by another…most not lending themselves to my photography addiction and that made me feel so distraught!

Soo….where do I begin?

Well, a couple of weeks ago, Ben and I began working on painting his bedroom.  Poor Ben. He had been given a small room and it was painted a (very!) pale pink color on the walls.  I loved that pink, as it really didn’t appear to be pink. When Ben was about ten, he decided pink was not his choice of color.  Taking matters into his own hands (quite literally, indeed!) he worked frantically, using an office stapler to mount newspapers and old maps to cover what he insisted was a hideous color.

Ben learned how to not only spackle, but also repair walls with some major flaws in them! He worked for a long time, removing those small staples and filling in the holes.  He had also made some larger holes in the walls so he learned how to repair those as well.

After visiting the home centers a few times and bringing home scads of color chips to mull over, Ben decided on a color called “Fretwire”.  *as in the wire used to form the frets on a guitar*  I thought the color might also be called buckskin, as it reminds me of that color. (really dating myself here…remember when there *weren’t* zillions of colors available?)

Here is a photo of the freshly painted room.

This photo seems a little light to me, but you can see it looks very nice with the moulding and floor. Too bad. Well, about the floor, anyway, as Ben wants to put down some carpeting.  Argh. Oh, hey, Ben’s ceiling isn’t boring white, either!  The color is Swiss Coffee.  Doesn’t that sound like something one would want to awaken to?

Mark and Ben have some plans for building a bed and finishing the room.  I will show photos as the room progresses.

This is the time of the year when we begin to think about decorating.  One of the projects we undertake is a Christmas wreath on Mark’s dad’s grave.  Al really loved Christmas, so this is really special. This year, I asked Mark if we might try doing the wreath ourselves.  We usually go to a business across the road from the cemetery, but I thought we might try our hand at this.  As it worked out, we bought a gorgeous wreath from Wegman’s.  The only thing I had put on at this point was the bow. (and yes, most always a lovely plaid!)

Michelle saw me decorating the wreath and thought she might like to give this a try, so I stepped aside. This is what she wound up creating.

I was thrilled with the end result, as was Mark.  The most surprising outcome of our do it yourself effort is that it cost about one-half of the price we typically spent.  And, it had a lot more decorations!

Thanksgiving was the 25th of November this year.  Carly had asked if we wanted to join her and her family at her in-laws’ home this year. Wow, Carly offered to make the entire feast (with lots of helo from her three kids) and I wasn’t about to let an offer like that go!

Madeline and Cy are the most awesome hosts and we spent the hours talking and laughing, sharing stories and just having so much fun!  Carly and the kids were bustling about in the kitchen when we arrived and it was awesome watching them work!

So, here are some photos of the most awesome feast!

That turkey could not have been any more perfectly browned! It looked like something from a magazine!!! (Carly used some recipes she had found in magazines to prepare this amazingly executed fare.)

Carly spent so much time creating this fit-for-a-king meal.  The bread used in making the stuffing was made by Carly! Carly’s Sarah has an allergy to soy and soy-based products, so Carly is careful about making food without those culprits.  It is tough sometimes, but she has been doing it long enough that it isn’t so taxing anymore.

Oh my, those devilled eggs were good! Carly made the mayonnaise used in making them as well since most mayonnaise contains some soy or soy products. The stuffing to the left of the eggs was awesome with cranberries and pecans included! On the very left of the photo is the delicious cranberry sauce she made.

By the way, isn’t that table elegant?  Madeline had created a most beautiful atmosphere in which to enjoy the meal! I loved the colors….everything really was picture-perfect!

The one dish I loved that I probably overate on was Brussel Sprouts and grapes.  I thought the combination really different, but it was lip-smacking good!

Oh, the rolls behind the Brussel Sprouts and Grapes were my (humble) contribution.  Carly had initially asked me to make an apple pie, but later asked if I could bring rolls instead. I love making rolls, so I was happy to do so.

Mmmm….there was rice with cranberries as well. There were amazing bite-sized biscuits with Chai and cranberries and simply amazing mashed potatoes with celery root.

The flowers on the table just added to this special meal!  Everything was fantastic!  I enjoyed this day so much. It was obvious that Carly and the kids had put a lot into this special holiday. Carly also made the most scrumptious pumpkin pie!

After a most filling meal, the women retreated to the kitchen to put away leftovers.  The kids went to the family room to enjoy some Wii games and Mark and Ben visited with Cy for quite some time. Cy had set up his bass guitar, thinking Ben might like to give it a try.  Ben thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and was impressed by some things Cy showed him and Mark.

It seemed like the time flew by…as always, times flies when the occasion is enjoyable!

Thanks again, Madeline, Cy, Carly, and all who contributed to make this day one of the most memorable ones we have enjoyed!  I am just sorry this is so late!
