The Revised Syrup Process

I was up and lighting a fire this morning at seven o’clock.  I felt an urgency to begin the syrup making process early, as I had several gallons of sap that needed to be boiled down.  I am unsure how much liquid the turkey fryer pan holds, but it was full to capacity, along with a five gallon bucket.

Here are photos from today.

This job was huge….my body is aching all over from lifting, bending, carrying!  Making syrup is not an easy task, that is for sure! But, oh, it is so sweet!!!

  • It will all be so worth it though!!! I really think you’ll love it. In the meantime…perhaps a couple of Aleve and a heating pad??

  • Ah, Jeanne, all I needed was a few hours of sleep! Feeling MUCH better this morning! I am just finishing the last little boil on the stovetop. I used to make syrup years ago, but oh, how easy it is to forget how much work is really involved. Syrup making is a job where you have to just stick with it until the job is done!

I was so tired last night, I didn’t mention about the bucket of wood! Mark and I have an ongoing “discussion” about Basswood. I ascertain it isn’t worth the gas and oil in the chainsaw to cut it. Well, I am eating Humble Pie now! After hours and hours of burning wet, smoky wood, I wandered in the garage and saw some small cutoffs of Basswood. I tried them in the fire and YIKES! The basswood burns so hot, it brings the sap to a nearly instant rolling boil!!! Okay. Basswood DOES have a place in the woods after all! And, I’ll take that Humble Pie with some Maple Syrup drizzled over the top!
