Rainbows in the Clouds?

While wandering about the other day amongst the wind generators atop the hills, I saw such a cool thing!

Of course, first I attributed it to my sunglasses. I removed them and it was still there! So, it must be that dark blue strip at the top of the windshield, right? Nope. I stepped out of the Explorer and it was still there!

Can someone explain this? (I am supposing it must have something to do with moisture and sun?)

What a lovely “sundog”! How lucky you were to catch such a nice photo of one.
According to Cy, sundogs are caused by light from the sun being refracted through ice crystals in the atmosphere. A sundog often has a “mate”, of similar appearance, on the other side of the sun.

  • I love sundogs! There are moondogs too… hence the name Moondoggy from way back when ;)
It took me forever to get Mikey to be able to see them. He wasn’t understanding it for some reason. I see them a lot and he would always say I was crazy and seeing things until he saw one one day on his own. Then he understood the “coolness” of them.
