Sights at the Lake

This morning  I took a little jaunt down the road to see what was happening outside our woods.

As I drove northward, the sky took on a very foreboding look! But……

This photo was taken just by turning to my left! (west)

I hopped on down to Woodville to see if anything was new there.  Nothing. Nothing at all.  I decided to get out of the Explorer, and I could hear the lake “talking”!  Well, the lake wasn’t actually the one(s) doing the talking! There was a flock of migrating Canada Geese out in the water, taking a break along their journey.

I was honing in to photograph the pretty trees across the lake with my long lens when this gull came cruising into the viewfinder!

I focussed back a bit to get more of the pretty autumn leaves, when another gull flew through the scenery…

As I watched, I could see by its flight, this wasn’t a gull! It was a Great Blue Heron.  It kept passing overhead, as though trying to decide where to land.

How is this for a graceful landing?  With those gangly, long legs,  the bird looks so funny! But what was even funnier was when it *did* land. The branch suddenly sagged down and within a few secoonds,  the bird lifted off once again! Sorry, no photos, as I was giggling out of control by this time!

  • I love your red leaves. I haven’t seen too many reds here yet, though there’s a tree near where I work which hopefully will turn soon.

  • The contrast in the sky between the first two pictures is incredible. I love the second picture. The colors are great!

  • I just love the skies at this time of year! We are well below freezing here tonight so I’m sure that the leaves will be in full color VERY soon! Beautiful contrasting sky pics!

  • That looks like a Common American Gull – which wasn’t all that common not so long ago.

Good sky photographs – they do make a startling contrast don’t they?

  • Ohhhhhh man that first photo is lake effect clouds for sure!! Have you noticed any changes in the woods this year? Nuts bigger, berry bushes more full of berries? I’m seeing all the signs of a bad, bad winter up here. I haven’t run into a blue spruce yet to see what the waxy coating is like on their needles, but I bet it’s thick… another sign of a bad winter.

I’m setting out with camera in hand tomorrow for a day of picture taking. Hope I get something worth posting this time… last time I had a card full of blurry images lol

  • Terri – large crops of berries etc. say more about the previous weather than they do about that coming. Last year our berries were more plentiful than before – it was a miserable wet winter, but not all that cold.
