Saving Dragons…

After showing dragonflies as my Wordless Wednesday entry yesterday, I felt so sad this morning as I saw a dragonfly lying on top of the pool water. I watched as its body just swirled around with the movement of the pump….it didn’t move at all.

I went and grabbed the pole with the skimmer net on it and swooped up the poor little waterlogged dragonfly.  I tapped it loose on the grass,  and you cannot imagine my surprise when it began to flap its wings rapidly!

Once again, I caught it up in the net and moved it over to the tall grass that isn’t mowed…

You can see the water drops on the lacy little wings in these photos.  Hopefully, our little dragonfly will be okay!

  • Goodness – you’re braver than I am – I’d never dare pick it up! (I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to creepy crawlies!)

  • How cool. It looks as though it is hanging on to that blade of grass for dear life. I imagine once it’s wings are dry, it will be able to fly. I’m surprised it got stuck in the pool. I frequently find them around water. It seems odd that it ‘fell in’.

Does that count as “Dragonfly CPR”? If so, it would appear that your efforts were highly successful. Beautiful photos, too, by the way.

  • Ah, Jackie…I have seen photos on the net of people holding dragonflies on their hands, and like you, I think I would get the heebie-jeebies!!! i used the net to capture this one! (smile)

Carly, yeah, not too sure how the fellow ended up in the water…I set him on the grass and he moved his wings a million miles an hour! I think he was so waterlogged, he just could not fly!

Madeline! Yes! CPR!!! hehehe He did fly away after about an hour, so I guess the save was a success, indeed!!!

  • A slight wave or rain when he/she was at the pool surface could have been enough to waterlog it. Well saved.

  • Bill…aha! It POURED down rain yesterday! You are probably correct…the dragonfly was “adhered” to the pool water by the rain! If that little bugger could talk, I am pretty sure it would have thanked me….the way it “shook” its wings was incredible. It held onto the grass so tightly, then eventually flew off….
